Travel and tourism has always been key to the United Kingdom’s economy. Although the economy was affected by the recession; this has brought on a boom in domestic tourism according to Report Linker’s Travel & Tourism in the UK report. It is no surprise to any of us that because of money issues and travel problems, many more people are spending their holidays in the UK. The overall trend by politicians, particularly Jeremy Hunt, has been to encourage local spending in the country to help the recovery of the economy by losing as little money as possible to other countries.

There are a number of reasons why the economic situation has encouraged holidaying in the UK, primarily that it is a much more flexible option in terms of both finance and time. This has led to an increase in demand for the many different regions around the UK that offer the kind of peace and tranquility people are searching for, which has benefited Kett Country Cottages.

Those areas which are now seeing the highest amount of UK tourists are those which offer both beach holidays and countryside holidays. As a result of this, research has shown that one of the more popular holiday areas is Norfolk. It is benefiting from the natural surroundings which are so appealing to domestic tourists, including the ever-popular Norfolk Broads.

Additional revenue for ecological efforts is due to the host of nature reserves and parks. Some observers have attributed the increased revenue and popularity of the area to the fact that some of the finest beaches in Britain such as Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Waxham can be found there. These natural tourist attractions greatly improve the profile of the area and help to ensure that at peak season, there is a high level of occupancy of holiday accommodation.

In terms of accommodation the most popular types are staying at the home of a friend or relatives and at a guesthouse (Keynote, 2010). There has been an increase in tourists’ demand for a holiday that provides the feeling of a home away from home. This can be attributed to the fact that these types of holidays allow the freedom of exploring, which is the lure of a holiday abroad, but with those home comforts that are so appealing to tourists. The research shows that renting a self-catering cottage or a converted barn in the countryside are the most favoured holiday choices amongst British tourists at the moment. Many local tourist authorities are hoping that even when the economy strengthens, the level of spending in local tourist areas remains high.

With the holiday and tourism industry growing and UK residents being urged to put money back into the local economy, a Norfolk weekend break or holiday away shouldn’t make you feel too guilty…
